If you still have a question after reading the various sections of this website, you may find the answer here in this section, which contains a selection of queries received from our players over the years. If you don't find an answer to your particular question, please use the contact form and we'll get back to you with an answer just as soon as we can!

Which are the 10 states responsible for the North German Lottery?

The state governments of Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North-Rhine-Westphalia, Saarland, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein form the consortium which runs the North Germany Lottery and guarantees the prizes.

Can anyone find out that I have won a prize in the lottery?

No, not unless you choose to tell them. Winnings are paid out in full, tax-free, and in strict confidence. The names of winners are never published.

I am playing ticket fractions. I understand that I get a pro rata share of any cash prize but what if I win one of the bonus prizes such as a car, how can that be shared?

The serious answer is, of course, that it can't, although in moments of levity we have been known to advise that a quarter ticket would receive one tyre and a gear box before going on to give the correct answer, namely, that ticket fractions are identified by a letter at the end of the 7-digit ticket number, i.e.

A for whole tickets
A and B for half tickets,
A-D for quarter tickets
A-H for eighth tickets
A-P for sixteenth tickets.

In the draws for cash prizes no final identifying letter is required because every ticket bearing the winning number receives the same prize, either the prize in full for a whole ticket down to a 1/16 share for a 1/16 ticket.

In the bonus prize draws a 7-digit ticket number is drawn and also a final identifying letter, meaning that in the case of a ticket fraction only one of the tickets bearing that number wins the prize.

I want to join the lottery but the game has already started.

This is no problem, you can join the game at any time. However, as explained in the "How the lottery works" section you will still need to pay the ticket stake from the 1st Class onwards, regardless of when you join. As soon as your payment is received you will join the game in the next Main Draw (Main Draws are held every Friday).

How can I terminate my subscription?

You can terminate your subscription at any time by phone, e-mail, fax or letter, with effect from the end of the current class. So if you terminate on the 1st of the month when the draws of the current class have just begun, the earliest you can be withdrawn from the game is at the end of that month, when the class is over. If you terminate before the last day of the month you can be withdrawn immediately at the end of the class. Of course, if you have read the rest of the site before coming here you will know that it makes sense to play a whole lottery series to benefit from all the winning odds – but you are certainly not obliged to do so.

Do I have to order my tickets again for each class of the lottery?

No, that's one less thing for you to worry about! Once you have received your ticket numbers for the first time these numbers belong to you. Until such time as you terminate your play we continue to reserve these tickets for you from class to class and through to the following series. You receive a new ticket certificate in advance of each class along with your monthly account and the official winning list. Each ticket certificate is valid for one class (i.e. one calendar month).

I would like to take part in the lottery but I don't want anyone in my family to know. Is this possible?

Provided you are over 18 (the legal age for lottery participation) this is not a problem. Normally we send your ticket certificate and all correspondence by post but if you prefer us to hold your ticket certificate in a depot for you and to send all correspondence by e-mail, please write a message to this effect in the "Special Instructions" form on the Order page. You can also change your instructions at any time using the contact form.

Can I choose my own ticket numbers?

Unfortunately not. The 3 million tickets in the NKL are all unique numbers so it is not logistically possible for players to choose their own. However, if you have any special lucky numbers of either single or double digits (7 or 77, for example) we will do our best to issue you with tickets ending in or containing these numbers if you let us know on the "Special Instructions" form on the Order page. As tickets are issued on a first-come, first-served basis, we cannot guarantee that the numbers of your choice will be available, however. All we can guarantee is that we will try our best!
